One Came Home by Amy Timberlake

We’re run by a church, but we’re not only for church members and we’re not about converting people. We’re known as being fair even as the world becomes as polarized as at any time since the newspaper’s founding in 1908. Monitor journalism changes lives because we open that too-small box that most people think they live in.

Georgie falls unconscious from exhaustion and wakes up in a hotel room. She is treated to a warm bath and new clothes, courtesy of Mr. Olmstead. He tells her that Billy also told him about the kiss, and he regrets not trusting Agatha. He also tells Georgie that the authorities are looking for Mr. Garrows and his accomplices.

Georgie does what she can to stay out of her grandfather’s and mother’s way over the next two days. She’s surprised and grateful when she finds that her grandfather cleaned her gun on Saturday night. Georgie leaves a note and sneaks out of the house. He returns her five gold pieces and says he will loan her the mule and the equipment needed for the trip, but only if he can accompany her. Research shows a connection between kids' healthy self-esteem and positive portrayals in media.

When the body is returned to the family, it is in such an advanced state of decay it can't be properly identified. Guilt plagues her marrow because Agatha has run off as a result of Georgie interfering with Agatha's relationship with her fiance. Nobody likes a tattler, but imagine if your whistleblowing killed your sister. I really enjoyed this book that I downloaded from the library without even reading reviews. I definitely recommend this book for people 12+. I think young boys would like this as much as girls.

She is convinced that her older sister, whom everyone in town believes is dead, is still alive and sets off to the western frontier to find her. When the sheriff returns a body wearing Agatha's blue-green gown to Placid, everyone, even the girls' mother, assumes it's Agatha. Did something she said send her sister packing? Or was it the kiss she witnessed and reported? Truly, 13-year-old Georgie can't imagine why anyone would prefer marriage "when you could live life encumbrance-free by running a store with your sister." One of the best children's books of early 2013 tells the tale of a young girl whose sister goes missing during the largest passenger pigeon roosting ever.

To Georgie's surprise, she’s joined on the journey by her sister’s former flame. And what a journey it is, fraught with mountain lions, counterfeiters and marriage proposals. The icing on the cake, though, is Georgie’s narration, which is fresh, laugh-out-loud funny and an absolute delight to read. Telling the story of the largest pigeon nesting ever recorded was inspired by a nonfiction history of passenger pigeons.

A spunky heroine and some killer writing save what was altogether a pretty ho-hum book. Setting out to prove that her older sister is not dead, Georgie is a character that many older elementary/younger junior high girls could look up to and admire. However, I think this book is geared more towards adults who read children's literature.

He now shares his passion for seaplane flying with students from around the globe in various single engine aircraft and writes when the weather grounds him. Recent adventures include piloting a Super Cub as the stunt double for John Cusack in The Frozen Ground, a movie based on a serial-killer investigation written about in Alaska & Beyond. Some of the problems in the book arise because communications were not instant in the 1870s as they are today, and crime forensics was not advanced. Comparing the two eras and how they may have produced a different story would be a good topic for discussion. Georgie also learns a lot during the story as she begins to see situations from others viewpoints as well as her own.

Not 100% sold, but excited to get into the book and find out who should claim it. The kiss between Agatha and Billy is central to the story. Georgie does not attend Billy’s wedding to Polly but was told that they kissed with such devotion that all the adults looked away. Several times during their journey, Georgie is drawn to Billy’s handsome face and physique.

In 1871, in the small town of Placid, Wis., a sister goes missing and a great adventure begins.

She finds it hard to believe that God can distinguish her from all the other 13-year-old girls in the world. If she knew that her life would just end, like a candle being blown out, then she wouldn’t worry about killing the criminals. But if there is a chance that God and eternal life exist, she is afraid of dying. She makes a bargain with God that if He keeps her alive, they’ll talk about things soon. She ran away to go to school, just as she’d dreamed. Her mother and Sheriff McCabe plan on honeymooning there, and she asks if Mr. Olmstead might come along for a visit as well.

Not the books that telegraph their hits or do the old one-two punch you can see coming from a mile away. No way, man, I'm talking about the books where you're reading along, merrily as you please, and then this hammer of a hit comes in from out of the blue and just hocks the wind right out of you. Middle grade fiction, also known as chapter book fiction for kids, can sometimes feel like one long unending stream of samey sameness.

She's so earnest and innocent in the beginning. I didn't understand why she didn't do what she did at the end in the first place but she needed the journey to grow as a character. She changes a lot as a result of all she's been through. I liked her best when she was acting stubborn and hoydenish.

Georgie and Billy don’t follow Mr. Garrows’ advice, because to turn around would lead them back through a valley filled with mosquitoes. Georgie shows Billy the ribbon, and the two of them stop to discuss the various things that may have happened to Agatha. Whether she is dead or alive, they are certain the Garrows know more than what they are saying. Georgie explores the area a bit and finds a cave.

Reading Challenge

She uses a country twang sort of voice of Georgie, not quite Annie Get Your Gun but close. She pitches her voice lower for Billy and uses different voices for the adults Georgie encounters. She's not as diverse as Jim dale but I really enjoyed the voices.
